Chapter 6 - My Hairdressing Story

Hi I’m Andrea and I’ve been hairdressing now for over 20 years. I started in 2000 at Hair by Neil in Pontefract as a trainee. Worked 5 days per week and went to college to do level 2 hairdressing in Barnsley once per month. Neil trained me thoroughly in cutting. colouring was taught by college and fellow hairdressers. I completed my training after 2 years and continued to work there for a year after training. I continued onto level 3 hairdressing. I feel I got the best start from this salon for my career.

I then moved on to revival in Castleford. I completed level 3 hairdressing and worked here for around 8/9 years. James taught me to understand the knowledge of hair colour and how to do hair up. My knowledge in hairdressing extended through working in this salon. I had both my children whilst at revival and ended up working part time. During this time I did some mobile hairdressing as well as in the salon. I found this harder than working in a salon.

In 2012 I decided to work for myself. I rented a chair in samtastique that was situated in the car park at methley bridge farm shop. This was in a large wooden cabin offering hair and beauty. I Worked here for a couple of years and is where I first met the lovely Chelsea, who later worked with me in the hair branch.

It didn’t work out for me there so found Gillian at the hair branch. Rented a chair. Gillian taught me so much more about colouring as this is what she specialised in. This is where the hair branch salon journey started.

Each of these parts of my hairdressing journey has taught me different lessons in work and life. I’ve had great teachers throughout my career that’s made me a better hairdresser and also that’s made me a better person.
